Testing God Q & A
Exodus 17 Questions and Answers
What is the difference between a test and a temptation? God gives us tests so we can experientially see the condition of our heart. His heart is to see us mature and become more Christ like. Satan tempts us to lead us into sin and destroy us.
How are our tests similar to Israel’s? We are led to difficult, even impossible, situations and there we learn what is in our heart through our response. We either look to God and learn something about God or we complain and test God.
Why does God repeat tests? We get retested when we did not get the lesson the first time, or when we forget to apply what we had learned.
How did the people test God? Do we? We test God when we demand that He do something to prove Himself, or demand He perform according to our will before we will be obedient.
How did they threaten God? If God did not keep the covenant in the way they thought He should, they will stone His representative, Moses.
Why was Moses distraught? They people impugned his motives again. He is giving his life in service to save them, and they are declaring that he intended to kill them with thirst in the desert.
Why did God have Moses bring the elders? They were to be witnesses to the nation of what God did and how it was done.
Who is the Rock of Israel? God!
What is the reality behind the picture? Jesus was struck with the rod of God’s judgment that we might not die but have living water.
How do people quarrel with God today? There are many ways, but the current popular one is to deny the Word. ie: God would not kill His Son. OR atonement is a barbaric idea. But much more commonly in our own lives, we make demands of God instead of praying for His will. It is insisting He perform according to our limited understanding.
